Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the impact of the Concrete-Semi Concrete-Abstract (CRA) instructional strategy, presented in conjunction with the direct instruction method, on the two-stage mathematical problem-solving skills of middle school students with specific learning disabilities who require fundamental addition and subtraction skills. In accordance with this objective, the inquiry focused on the efficacy of the Concrete-Semi Concrete-Abstract (CRA) teaching strategy in cultivating mathematical problem-solving competencies. The investigation delved into the participants' capacity to generalize these competencies to diverse tools and contexts, the extent of skill retention one, two, and three weeks following the conclusion of the instructional period, and the perspectives of the teaching professionals involved in the study on the Concrete-Semi Concrete-Abstract (CRA) teaching strategy. Four middle school students, aged between 11 and 13, diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, participated in the study. The independent variable of the study was the multiple probe model with between-subjects probe trial, which is a single-subject research method. The dependent variable was the two-stage mathematical problem-solving skills requiring basic addition and subtraction taught with this strategy. The data from the study were subjected to graphical analysis. In light of the findings obtained in the study, it was concluded that Concrete-Semi Concrete-Abstract (CRA) instructional strategy was effective for all participants in teaching two-stage mathematical problem-solving skills requiring basic addition and subtraction. Furthermore, it has been observed that the competencies developed through the Concrete-Semi Concrete-Abstract (CRA) instructional approach can be transferred to various tools and settings. Additionally, these competencies are retained after one, two, and three weeks. A subsequent examination of the social validity findings revealed that the teachers expressed favorable opinions regarding both the strategy and the study. They posited that the strategy could be utilized not only in problem-solving but also in the instruction of various mathematical competencies. Moreover, they contended that it could be efficacious in the teaching of select acquisitions by adapting it to Science, English, and Education of Religion and Ethics courses for their respective branches, excluding those in mathematics. The findings of the study were interpreted by comparing them with other studies in the literature, and recommendations were made for practice and future research.
