Abstract
Self-handicapping occurs when individuals create obstacles before a performance to find excuses for their failures. In this way, they externalize the situation by using obstacles as an excuse for their failure, and when they succeed, they claim that they have succeeded despite the obstacles, and both reinforce their success and internalize the situation. This research aims to examine the role of emotional intelligence and self-control in the self-handicapping tendencies of university students. 472 undergraduate and graduate students studying in various universities in Turkey participated in the study. 359 (76.1%) were female, and 113 (23.9%) were male. 412 (87.3%) were undergraduate students, and 60 (12.7%) were graduate students. A Personal Information Form, the Self-handicapping Scale, the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form, and the Brief Self-Control Scale were used to collect data. According to the results, the variance explaining emotional intelligence and self-control in the model created to explain self-handicapping in university students was found to be 51%. Self-discipline and impulsivity factors, the sub-dimensions of emotional intelligence and self-control variables in the model, were found to be significant predictors. Self-handicapping did not show significant difference according to gender. However, the self-handicapping tendency in undergraduate students was significantly higher than that in graduate students. The self-handicapping score of those with 5-hour- or more daily internet usage was significantly higher than those spending less time on the Internet. Students with high self-handicapping scores mostly used the internet for social media and games. A negative relationship was found between self-handicapping and academic grade point.
