Abstract

The geometry paradigm, which can be defined as the conceptions that guide students while solving a geometry problem, is the determinant of how one approaches a geometry problem and what qualities a solution that can be considered valid should have. Houdement and Kuzniak (1999) defined three geometry paradigms based on the knowledge acquisition components of intuition, experimentation and inference: Natural Geometry (GD), Natural Axiomatic Geometry (GDA) and Formal Axiomatic Geometry (GFA). The aim of this study is to take a photograph of the geometry paradigms of students at different levels of education, and based on this photograph, to examine in which grades the transition is concentrated and how the frequency of the indicators of the paradigms varies according to the grade levels. It was considered appropriate to use a cross-sectional survey study method in this study, which aims to instantly determine how an existing situation emerges in students at different education levels. Accordingly, the sample of the study consisted of 350 students, 63 of whom were 8th graders, 82 of whom were 9th graders, 69 of whom were 10th graders, 70 of whom were 11th graders and 66 of whom were 12th graders. 'Geometry Problems Test' consisting of four geometry questions selected from the literature was applied to these students. The data obtained were analyzed using an analysis approach shaped by the literature and pilot study data, showing how the components of intuition, experimentation and inference emerge in the context of natural geometry and natural axiomatic geometry. The data obtained showed that students' answers could not be evaluated under a single paradigm most of the time, and that students made transitions between paradigms while solving problems. In order to examine these answers in the context of transition in more detail, the student answers were evaluated under 5 categories: G1 (The answer is completely based on GC indicators), GÇ1 (The answer is mostly based on GD indicators), GÇ (The answer is evenly distributed between GD and GDA indicators), GÇ2 (The answer is mostly based on GDA indicators) and G2 (The answer is completely based on GDA indicators). The results showed that students' transition from the GD paradigm to the GDA paradigm occurred after the 10th grade level, and that students, regardless of grade level, could not develop coherent understandings and were mostly assigned to mixed categories (GÇ1, GÇ, GÇ2). Based on the results obtained, it was evaluated that the transition from GD to GDA after 10th grade was a very delayed transition and it was suggested that more activities should be included to support the transition, especially at the 9th and 10th grade levels.
Sınıf, 70'i 11.
