Abstract
A project is an endeavor undertaken to find a solution to a problem in any field. Projects provide students with the opportunity to gain experience through diverse and fun activities. Scientific research, collaboration, investigation, and product creation are important elements of project-based learning. The purpose of this study is to examine the cognitive structures and metaphorical perceptions of science teachers and middle school students regarding the concept of project. This study is a qualitative research using a descriptive survey model. The study sample consisted of 351 middle school students (5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades) and 72 science teachers. Data collection tools included a Word Association Test (WAT), drawing questions, and a metaphor form. Content analysis was used in data analysis. Analysis of the data obtained from the WAT revealed that the associated words associated with the concept of project were clustered around the themes of design, learning aids, tools and equipment, effort, social benefit, originality and idea generation, process management, teamwork, source of motivation, solution generation, burden/difficulty, and others. The frequencies of associated words generated within each theme are presented in the tables. The frequencies of the themes generated from the data obtained from the drawing question regarding the concept of project are presented in the tables. Sample drawings for each theme are also included in the tables. Metaphors related to the concept of project were grouped under themes based on common characteristics. The metaphors were grouped under the themes of design, aiding learning, effort, social benefit, originality and idea generation, source of motivation, process management, teamwork, solution generation, and burden/difficulty. The research revealed that middle school students generated a total of 146 metaphors. The science teacher generated a total of 56 metaphors. It was concluded that students mostly viewed projects as a process of building something and producing a tangible product. Themes such as originality and idea generation indicate that students approach projects as a space of expression where they can showcase their personal creativity. Science teachers, on the other hand, concluded that projects are a multifaceted learning process encompassing elements such as production, creativity, and social responsibility. Practices that provide students with the opportunity to experience the process, encourage idea generation, and activate higher-order thinking skills should be prioritized.
