Abstract

K12 online learning is of interest for researchers, and it has become a way out for all education levels with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this research is therefore to reveal the perceptions of secondary school teachers concerning online learning who found themselves in this mode of teaching in no time during the epidemic. The research was carried out with 111 teachers who taught online classes in secondary schools during the spring term of the 2020–2021 academic year when face-to-face formal education was interrupted and distant education immediately became the mainstream due to the COVID-19 in the province of Trabzon, as in the rest of Turkey. The participants took part on a voluntary basis. As a qualitative research design, phenomenology was used in the research. For collecting data, the participants were given online forms on which they were required to complete the statement, “Online learning is like/similar to… because…” The participants’ responses were analyzed with content analysis. It was seen that the participants have both positive and negative perceptions about the concept of online learning. During the data analysis, the metaphors used by the teachers were analyzed and summarized in four categories as “infrastructure,” “interaction,” “motivation,” and “efficiency.” According to the results, a considerable number of the participating teachers, who had nothing to do but start online teaching due to the urgent transition to this learning environment, have a positive impression about online learning, and they consider it to be effective or efficient. Some of the teachers regard online learning as the future of education, a global classroom, equality of opportunities, and as life itself. In the light of these findings, it is recommended to conduct further research into the potential of online learning at secondary school level after the pandemic is over.
