Abstract

This study aims to compare and examine Turkey and Kenya's education systems, mathematics teacher training programs, and teacher induction systems. The study used the comparative survey method, one of the qualitative research methods. The study employed a descriptive comparative approach. In this context, the researcher collected the relevant documents from the relevant literature, the ministries of education of the countries within the scope of the research, the electronic pages of universities and educational networks, and we attempted to reveal the similarities and differences in the education systems, teacher training programs, and the criteria for starting the teaching profession. The descriptive analysis method was used to analyze the data obtained. The study's findings revealed that the education systems of both countries are generally similar. The most significant difference between the two countries' education systems is that Turkey has two lower grades (primary-secondary) and three lower grades (lower-middle-upper) in Kenya. When examining the programs that train mathematics teachers in Turkey and Kenya, it is notable that graduates in Turkey graduate with only one branch, whereas graduates in Kenya graduate with two branches. In addition, it was concluded that universities in Turkey that train mathematics teachers offer many more courses on both content knowledge and field education knowledge than in Kenya. In order to work as a mathematics teacher in public schools, it is necessary to be successful in the exam conducted by the Measurement, Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) in Turkey and then in the interview exam conducted by the Ministry of National Education, while in Kenya, applications must be made to schools with the documents determined by the Ministry of Education because of the exam conducted by the Kenya National Examination Council. In this context, although the two countries' education systems are pretty similar up to the university level, there are significant differences between the two countries regarding the programs that train mathematics teachers and the criteria for admission to the profession. This study compared the education systems, mathematics teacher training programs, and mathematics teacher induction systems of Kenya and Turkey. Similar themes can be examined in future studies in countries ranked high, middle, and low in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) exam.
