Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine primary school teachers' educational beliefs and attitudes towards professional development in terms of gender, experience, and age variables and to determine the relationship between these variables. The method of the study is relational scanning model. The sample of the study consists of 346 primary school teachers working in the Ortahisar county of Trabzon province during 2021-2022 academic year and selected by the random sampling method. The data were obtained by using the 'Educational Beliefs Scale', 'Attitude towards Professional Development Scale', and the personal information form which includes questions related to participants' demographics. Descriptive statistics and parametric tests were used to analyze the data. Results of the study indicated that primary school teachers adopted progressive and existential education beliefs at a high level, perpetual and reconstructive education beliefs at a lower level, while they did not adopt essentialism. Results also indicated that participants' attitudes towards professional development were positive in the dimensions of enjoying professional development and caring about professional development, and participants did not show resistance to professional development in the dimension of resistance to professional development. The variables of experience and age were found to have a low level significant effect on some sub-dimensions of education beliefs. Correlational analysis revealed positive, moderate, and weak correlations in some sub-dimensions between teachers' beliefs and their attitude towards professional development. Results indicated that teachers' educational beliefs affect their attitudes towards professional development at a low level but significantly. Findings were discussed by comparing them with other studies in the literature. Suggestion for future research is discussed.
