Abstract
In this study, the aim is to investigate the impact of the guide material, prepared by the 5E model, on students' conceptual development within the context of 'Let's Get to Know the Entities Around Us.' This research was conducted using a one-group pre-test-post-test experimental design. The research study's sample comprises 20 students from the 3rd grade of a primary school in the Arsin district of Trabzon province in the 2021-2022 academic year. The pilot application of the data collection tools was carried out with five students with 4th grade who had learned the subject before. The guide material for the unit 'Let's Get to Recognize the Entities Around Us,' prepared by the researcher, was applied to the sample by the classroom teacher during six instructional hours. The data for the research were collected through word association tests, a structured grid, and interview questions. It has been determined that students have misconceptions about living and non-living beings, such as 'The Sun, air, water, soil, and car are living things,' and 'tree, seed, and egg are non-living things.' The 5E model has been found to have a significant impact (z:3,562; p<.05) on students' conceptual development and the removal of conceptual misconceptions. For instance, with conceptual change texts, students' misconceptions about eggs and plants being non-living have been significantly removed; through the experimental activity (terrarium construction), misconceptions about seeds being non-living have also been greatly addressed. The study suggests that teachers should participate in in-service training seminars to be informed about possible conceptual misconceptions of students regarding living and non-living beings and to introduce strategies and activities such as conceptual change texts, conceptual cartoons, experiments, and drama that can be used to address and remove these misconceptions.
