Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effects of teaching with GeoGebra 3D Calculator, an Augmented Reality (AR) application, on the performance and mathematical attitudes of 5th-grade students toward geometric objects. The study adopted a quasi-experimental method. The study sample consisted of 59 fifth-grade students at a public school in the city centre of Trabzon. There were 30 students in the experimental group and 29 in the control group. The data were collected using the Geometry Achievement Test and the Attitude Scale towards Mathematics for the experimental and control groups and the Augmented Reality Applications Attitude Scale for the experimental group only. Data were analysed using dependent and independent t-tests and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The study results showed a significant difference between the student's academic performance and attitude towards mathematics in the experimental group, where instruction was delivered using AR applications, and the students in the control group, where there was no specific intervention. The results also showed that teaching in the experimental group positively influenced students' attitudes towards using AR. The fact that AR technology concretizes abstract mathematical concepts and provides students with experiences in a different learning environment led to these results. In light of the research findings, the impact of AR applications should be analysed at various grade levels and in other disciplines.
