Abstract
The current study aimed to determine the methods and techniques preferred by prospective teachers of social studies teacher training program in their lesson plans based on the constructivist 5E model and to explore their self-evaluations regarding the micro teaching practice. In this regard, the study analyzed social studies teacher training program prospective teachers' lesson plans and their self-evaluations after the micro teaching practices. The study was conducted with 38 third grader prospective teachers, 26 of whom were female and 12 were male, in the spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year; they were selected through purposeful sampling method. The study used document analysis method, among the qualitative research methods, in analyzing social studies teacher training prospective teachers' lesson plans prepared using the constructivist 5E model within the scope of "Methodology II" course. The points in the self-evaluation forms were determined by consulting expert opinions, which increased the content validity of the form, and the form was finalized after consulting social studies teacher training prospective teachers' opinions. The study used content analysis in analyzing prospective teachers' self- evaluations. The findings showed that the most preferred methods and techniques of prospective teachers in the lesson plans they prepared using the constructivist 5E model included games, collaborative learning activities, metaphors, drama, mind maps, and computer-assisted methods and techniques. Additionally, it was found that social studies teacher training prospective teachers used student-centered methods and techniques more frequently in their lesson plans. Besides, in the self- evaluation forms, it was seen that participants mentioned their excitement and fear before the micro teaching practice, their excitement and ease during the micro teaching practice while they felt relieved and happy after the micro teaching practice. The findings also showed that the aspects that prospective teachers in social studies teacher training program liked were classroom dominance and self-confidence, while the aspects that they did not like or wanted to change were language expressions and activities. On the basis of these findings, it was concluded that social studies teacher candidates had a rich method and technical knowledge and made realistic evaluations about themselves.
