Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the upper-extremity kinematics of successful and unsuccessful cross-court drop shots. The sample consisted of ten female Turkish national-team badminton players (U-19). Each athlete executed cross-court drop shots from the back court to the opponent's forecourt. Five successful and five unsuccessful shots per participant were analyzed. Dominant-side shoulder, elbow and wrist joints were included in the kinematic assessment. Three-dimensional motion data were collected with a Vicon Peak system (Oxford, UK). A total of 100 drop-shot trials (10 athletes × 10 trials) were labeled and modeled in Vicon Nexus (v1.8.4). Kinematic differences between successful and unsuccessful shots were evaluated with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, using SigmaPlot 11.0. The peak angular velocity of wrist flexion differed significantly between successful and unsuccessful shots (medium effect size, r = 0.607; p = 0.020), with higher velocities associated with unsuccessful outcomes. No significant differences were observed in joint linear velocities or angles at the shoulder, elbow or wrist. Across both conditions, the greatest linear velocity occurred at the wrist, followed by the elbow and shoulder, confirming a proximal-to-distal velocity increase. In conclusion, an excessive increase in wrist-flexion angular velocity appears to contribute to unsuccessful cross-court drop shots. Training interventions should therefore focus on controlling wrist speed during the stroke and on drills that enhance this specific motor skill.
