Abstract
Prosocial behavior refers to positive social behaviors such as helping, sharing, empathy, and cooperation. Engaging in prosocial behavior supports adolescents' psychological, emotional, and social well-being. Furthermore, a high prosocial tendency reduces the likelihood of adolescents engaging in risky behaviors such as aggression, bullying, violence, and substance use. In a place where prosocial behavior decreases, people may become alienated from each other and lose values such as trust and tolerance. Therefore, it is thought that investigating family-, school-, and individual-related variables that may be associated with prosocial behaviors in adolescents will contribute to the development of psycho-educational practices aimed at fostering these positive behavioral skills. This study aims to investigate the associations of family social support, school attachment, and basic psychological needs with prosocial behaviors in high school adolescents. This study, which is a quantitative research type, was designed according to the relational design. The study sample consisted of 1.271 students attending different types of high schools in Istanbul. The research data were collected in April of the second semester of the 2023–2024 academic year from preparatory class, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Adolescent Prosociality Scale (APS), the Basic Psychological Needs Scale (BPNS-L), the Adolescent School Attachment Scale (High School Form), and the Family Support Subscale of the Scale of Perceived Social Support (PSS-R). Descriptive statistics, Pearson Correlation Analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, and statistical test techniques based on group comparisons were used in the analysis of the research data. The study revealed that adolescents' prosocial behaviors are positively associated with school attachment and perceived social support from family, and negatively associated with basic psychological needs. It was found that basic psychological needs (need for relatedness, need for competence, and need for autonomy), school attachment, family social support, sex, participation in school-organized social and cultural activities, and age accounted for 13% of the total variance in prosocial behaviors.Adolescents' levels of prosocial behavior, family social support, school attachment, and basic psychological needs showed significant differences in terms of demographic variables such as sex, type of school attended, grade level, number of siblings, and frequency of participation in school-organized social, cultural, and sports activities. The study found that various factors related to the family, school, and individual are associated with prosocial behaviors. The findings were discussed within the framework of the existing literature, and several recommendations were proposed based on the results.
