Abstract
Dating violence has emerged as a significant psychological and social problem affecting the lives of many adolescents and young adults today. Among its various forms, psychological aggression has gained increasing attention due to both its prevalence and its role as a strong predictor of physical and sexual violence. Recent studies on dating violence suggest that prevention and intervention efforts should be developed with a particular focus on psychological aggression, highlighting the importance of addressing individual-level factors such as emotion regulation difficulties, which are frequently associated with this form of violence. In this context, the present study aims to examine the effect of an emotion regulation psychoeducation program on the psychological aggression levels of university students engaged in romantic relationships. In the study, the embedded design, one of the mixed methods, was employed. Quantitative data were collected using a personal information form, the Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Abuse, and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale – Short Form. On the other hand, qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interview forms. The study was conducted in two phases: a pilot implementation (9 sessions) and the main implementation (10 sessions). In both phases, experimental and control groups were established. While the pilot groups included 12 participants, the main study groups consisted of 14 participants. Quantitative data were analyzed using mixed-design ANOVA, and qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The quantitative findings revealed that the program was effective in reducing levels of psychological aggression, and that this effect remained in the follow-up assessments conducted two months later. No significant changes were observed in the control groups. The qualitative findings indicated that participants experienced increased knowledge and awareness of psychological aggression, reductions in aggressive behaviors within their relationships, and improvements in skills such as emotion regulation, communication, and empathy. Additionally, the positive experiences and gains from the group process were reported to have been transferred to daily life. These results suggest that structured group interventions aimed at improving emotion regulation skills can be an effective intervention method for reducing psychological dating violence.
