Abstract
The concept of metacognition has been studied in psychology research for many years, but it is a relatively new concept for educational research. Metacognition, frequently studied in educational research in recent years, has been studied significantly in different areas of education, especially mathematics and language education. However, there is a minimal number of studies in visual arts education. This study examined the metacognitive skills of high school students in the drawing process. The phenomenology model, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study. The study group research consisted of 20 students selected by purposive sampling method, attending the 9th grade of an academic high school (Project School) in a province in the northeast of Turkey. Activity-based interview forms, semi-structured observation forms, and documents were used to collect the data for the study. The content analysis method was used to analyze the collected data. The study showed high school students demonstrated metacognitive planning, monitoring, and evaluation skills while drawing. The most original result of the study was that after the students had finished the picture, they stood in front of them and looked at it, measured it, or looked at the perspective to decide whether the picture was appropriate. In the last part of the study, suggestions were made for practitioners and researchers using the results obtained.
