Abstract
Algorithmic thinking is also a problem-solving process. Developing algorithmic thinking skills enables students to systematically approach problems, identify solutions, and apply appropriate strategies (Brown, 2015). On the other hand, the processes of decomposition, abstraction, algorithm creation, and debugging in the algorithmic thinking process require a great deal of metacognitive thinking (Voskoglou & Buckley, 2012). Therefore, it is evident that these three concepts—algorithmic thinking skills, problem-solving, and metacognitive skills—are interrelated (Güllü-Egin, 2024). For this reason, the study aimed to reveal the effect of algorithmic-supported activities on the problem-solving success and metacognitive awareness of students in the third grade of secondary education. In addition, it was investigated whether algorithm-supported activities caused a change in students' solution strategies. The study, which was planned in accordance with a quasi-experimental research design, was conducted with 38 students in the 11th grade of a college in the Eastern Black Sea Region during the 2024-2025 academic year. The 'Algorithm-Supported Activities' were used in accordance with the scope of the research. The intervention program lasted eight weeks, including pre- and post-tests. To obtain the data, the 'Problem Solving Test' and the 'Metacognitive Awareness Scale' were used as tools. According to the research results, algorithm-supported activities increased the success of the problem-solving test, and this increase was found to be statistically significant. On the other hand, algorithm-supported activities were also found to be effective in strategy selection. Although an increase in metacognitive awareness was observed, the statistical analyses indicated that this increase was not statistically significant. In this context, algorithm-supported activities are recommended as effective instructional tools that go beyond teaching procedural steps and foster high school students' cognitive processes related to problem solving
