Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the mediating role of psychological resilience in the relationship between job search anxiety and emotional eating in unemployed university graduates. Methods: This study was conducted using a relational research model. The study was conducted between July and August 2024 with a total of 540 unemployed individuals, including 482 women and 58 men. Data collection tools included the "Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire", "Job Search Anxiety Scale (JSAS)", "Emotional Eating Scale (EES)", and "Brief Psychological Resilience Scale (BPRS)". Results: In the analysis of the data, a low positive correlation was found between the job search anxiety scale and the emotional eating scale, while a moderate negative correlation was found with the brief psychological resilience scale, both of which were statistically significant (r:0.16; r:-0.42; p<0.05). The direct effect of the job search anxiety scale score on the emotional eating scale was not found to be significant [B=0.11 (CI:-0.02; 0.24); β:0.07]. However, the indirect effect of the job search anxiety scale score on the emotional eating scale was found to be significant [B=0.13 (CI:0.08; 0.19); β:-0.09]. It was found that the Short Psychological Resilience Scale has a mediating effect on the relationship between the Job Search Anxiety Scale score and the Emotional Eating Scale. Conclusion: Individuals with increased job search anxiety may turn to emotional eating behavior to combat the resulting stress. Psychological resilience may play a mediating role in preventing the use of emotional eating as a coping method for job search anxiety.
