Abstract

This study aims to determine chemistry teachers' level of use of teaching methods-techniques and perceptions of competence. For this purpose, a descriptive survey model was used. The research sample consisted of 309 chemistry teachers working in Anatolian high schools across Turkiye. The data were obtained from three data collection tools administered to the participants. The first of these was a personal information form that aimed to determine the demographic characteristics of the chemistry teachers. The second data collection tool was the Survey on the Levels of Using Teaching Methods-Techniques (SLUTMT), which aimed to determine the level of chemistry teachers' use of different teaching methods and techniques. The third data collection tool was the Survey on the Perception of Proficiency in Teaching Methods-Techniques (SPPTMT), which aimed to determine the extent to which chemistry teachers perceive themselves as competent in using different teaching methods and techniques. The personal information form included questions investigating some demographic information about chemistry teachers (gender, faculty of graduation, professional experience, whether they have received in-service training on teaching methods and techniques, level of education, weekly class hours, and whether their school has a laboratory). This study also investigated how chemistry teachers' use of teaching methods and techniques and their perceptions of competence varied according to these variables. Data obtained from the surveys were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 package program, which employed independent samples t-tests, Kruskal-Wallis H test, Mann-Whitney U test, and One-Way ANOVA. Based on the data obtained from the SLUTMT, it was revealed that chemistry teachers used lecture, question-answer, and problem-solving methods-techniques most frequently, and Six Thinking Hats, panels, and forums least frequently. Similarly, based on the data obtained from the SPPTMT, it was revealed that chemistry teachers considered themselves most proficient in lecture, question-answer, and problem-solving methods-techniques, and least frequently in Six Thinking Hats, panels, and forums. Furthermore, it was revealed that neither their level of use nor their perception of competence varied across many variables examined, but only differed based on the presence of a chemistry laboratory in the school. Based on the study results, it is recommended that chemistry teachers use more student-centered teaching methods and techniques in the teaching process.
