Abstract

The purpose of this study is to conduct a detailed examination of the teaching process of the numbers and operations unit in the 1st grade mathematics course through the use of interactive reading practices, and to present insights into students' achievement levels and reflections based on their perspectives during the process. Case study, one of the qualitative research approaches, was used in the study. The sample of the study consisted of 8 students who did not receive pre-school education in a public primary school in a village in a district of a province located in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey in the 2022-2023 academic year and who attended the first grade. One of the students was included in the implementation process because he needed special education, but no data collection tool was applied to the student. Data were collected through semi-structured interview questions, video recordings, researcher notes, researcher diary and worksheets. The data were analyzed in accordance with the content analysis structure. The study results revealed that students liked the way of teaching mathematics by interactive reading and that it positively supported students' achievement in the sub-learning area of numbers and operations. It has been found that students derived enjoyment from the in-class activities. In light of this study, it may be recommended to use children's books and interactive reading applications to support students' mathematics learning.
