Abstract
The In recent years, robotics activities have become increasingly common in informatics courses in secondary schools. In these activities, students can use their mathematical thinking skills to solve robotic problems in many situations. In this direction, the aim of the research is to determine how mathematical thinking skills are displayed in educational robotics activities. For this purpose, activities that can be carried out with Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot kits were designed and implemented in the study. The study was conducted as an exploratory case study with secondary school students, and observation, open-ended questions and clinical interviews were used as data collection tools. The data obtained from open-ended questions, observations and clinical interviews were analyzed with the content analysis technique and the dimensions of mathematical thinking skill that emerged in educational robotics were created. As a result, it was determined that the students used the strategies of customization and generalization, which are among the dimensions of mathematical thinking skills, while solving problems in robotics activities. Among these strategies, 'Recognizing the symmetry' for the customization component, 'Searching for a relationship between the angle and the direction of rotation', 'Recognizing the wide angle, the narrow angle' and 'noticing the sign change in the change of direction in the angles' come to the fore, while the 'Ask a question' for the generalization component come to the fore. The strategies of 'realizing compatible solutions', 'Using algebraic operations' and 'Making calculations' came to the fore. Robot features and the formation of mathematical contexts in educational robotics activities were determined as the main elements that stand out in the display of mathematical thinking skills. It is hoped that the study will contribute to the mathematical thinking potential in robotic activities in the context of applications.
