Abstract
The aim of this research is to determine the contribution of visual arts lessons to student development through the opinions of guidance counselors. A semi-structured interview form was administered to these guidance counselors on a voluntary basis. In this context, participants were asked a total of nine questions, three questions for each of the three sub-objectives. The research concluded that visual arts lessons are necessary, important, and supportive of physical/motor development. It was found that visual arts lessons contribute to and support physical/motor development, and that teachers can conduct practical, self-confidence-boosting activities to positively contribute to physical/motor development. Furthermore, it was concluded that more time should be allocated to activities that challenge students' imagination and creative thinking, a safe environment should be created, and works should be appreciated and supported, positive feedback should be given, and students should be encouraged to feel valued and empowered. The study concluded that activities should be provided where students can express their feelings, group activities should be conducted to develop their social skills and emotions, and students should be emotionally supported by being given tasks and responsibilities. The study concluded that visual arts lessons are necessary, important, and supportive for students' mental/cognitive development, contributing to and improving this development. It was determined that visual arts lessons positively influence, improve, balance, and advance mental/cognitive development. The study concluded that visual arts teachers should incorporate group activities that foster higher-level skills such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, reasoning, and creative thinking, as well as observation skills, in order to positively contribute to mental/cognitive development. Furthermore, it was found that awareness can be raised among students by utilizing universal works of art, and that academically underperforming students can gain a sense of belonging and achievement through art activities, thereby supporting their academic success.
