Development and Evaluation of a Digital Story-Supported Virtual Museum for Students with Specific Learning Disabilities

Abstract

The purpose of this design and development research (DDR) study is to develop a digital story (DS) supported virtual museum (DSsVM) for students with special learning disabilities (SLD) and to examine the impact of the developed museum on the conceptual understanding and recall levels of students with SLD. It is vital that museums, which play a crucial role in the transmission of cultural heritage, be accessible to everyone in societies. A review of studies on virtual museums reveals that facilitative practices are primarily focused on individuals with visual or hearing impairments, while studies targeting individuals with SLD are quite limited. In this study, a digital storytelling-supported virtual museum was developed for 5th grade students with SLD. The developed DSsVM provides both guidance for visitors and information about the topics presented in the museum through digital stories. The research was planned within the framework of DDR, which offers the opportunity to work with diverse participant groups at different stages. Computer educational and instructional technologies (CEIT), special education and social sciences experts, and social studies teachers were involved in the analysis, design, development, and evaluation processes of DSsVM. The implementations were conducted with a total of nine students with SLD (three in the pilot study and six in the main study) through the analysis, development, implementation, and evaluation processes. Semi-Structured Interview Form developed by the researchers, DSsVM Evaluation Form, DS Evaluation Form, DSsVM Usability Form, Student Digital Story (SDS) Evaluation Form, Conceptual Understanding Form, and Semi-Structured Observation Form were used as data collection tools during the DDR process. Content and descriptive analysis methods were used for qualitative data analysis, while descriptive statistics were used for quantitative data analysis. The most appreciated aspects of the developed DSsVM by the field experts were content's presentation through digital stories, including a virtual guide, and including an interactive museum floor plan. Furthermore, it was concluded that the developed DSsVM significantly contributed to the conceptual understanding and recall levels of students with SLD.Tasarım ve geliştirme araştırması (TGA) olarak yürütülen bu çalışmanın amacı, özel öğrenme güçlüğü (ÖÖG) yaşayan öğrencilere yönelik dijital öykü (DÖ) destekli sanal müze (DÖdSM) geliştirmek ve geliştirilen müzenin ÖÖG yaşayan öğrencilerin kavramsal anlama ve hatırlama düzeylerine etkisini incelemektir. Kültürel mirasın aktarımında önemli bir yer tutan müzelerin herkes için erişilebilir olması önemlidir. Sanal müzelerle ilgili çalışmalar incelendiğinde daha ziyade görme ya da işitme alanında yetersizlik gösteren bireylere yönelik kolaylaştırıcı uygulamalara yer verildiği, ancak ÖÖG yaşayan bireylere yönelik çalışmaların ise oldukça sınırlı olduğu görülmektedir. Bu araştırmada 5.sınıfa devam eden ÖÖG yaşayan öğrencilere yönelik, dijital öykülerle desteklenmiş bir sanal müze geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen DÖdSM'de hem ziyaretçiler için rehberlik hizmeti hem de müzedeki konular ile ilgili bilgilendirmeler dijital öyküler yardımıyla sunulmuştur. Araştırma, farklı aşamalarda farklı katılımcı gruplar ile çalışma imkânı sunan TGA kapsamında planlanmıştır. DÖdSM'nin analiz, tasarım, geliştirme ve değerlendirme süreçlerinde bilgisayar ve öğretim teknolojileri (BÖTE), özel eğitim ve sosyal bilimler alan uzmanları, sosyal bilgiler öğretmenleri yer almaktadır. Araştırma kapsamında ayrıca, analiz, geliştirme, uygulama ve değerlendirme süreçlerinde pilot çalışmada üç, asıl çalışmada altı olmak üzere toplam dokuz ÖÖG yaşayan öğrenci ile çalışmalar yürütülmüştür. TGA sürecinde araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen Yarı Yapılandırılmış Mülakat Formu, DÖdSM Değerlendirme Formu, DÖ Değerlendirme Formu, DÖdSM Kullanılabilirlik Formu, Öğrenci Dijital Öykü (ÖDÖ) Değerlendirme Formu, Kavramsal Anlama Formu, Yarı Yapılandırılmış Gözlem Formu veri toplama araçları olarak kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde nitel veriler için içerik ve betimsel analiz yöntemlerinden, nicel verilerin analizinde ise betimsel istatistik hesaplamalardan faydalanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda geliştirilen DÖdSM'de içeriğin dijital öykülerle sunulması, bir sanal rehberin bulunması, etkileşimli bir müze kat planının bulunması ön plana çıkan özelliklerden olmuştur. Ayrıca geliştirilen DÖdSM'nin ÖÖG yaşayan öğrencilerin kavramsal anlama ve hatırlama düzeylerine büyük oranda katkı sağladığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
