Abstract
In this study, the effect of basic classical guitar education on electric guitar playing skills was investigated. An answer has been sought for the necessity of classical guitar education before the electric guitar education which has been a controversial subject since the invention of the electric guitar. In the conducted research, it was deemed appropriate to use qualitative and quantitative approaches together. Based on this, interviews were conducted with guitar trainers in the qualitative context and an application equivalent to the pre-test post-test controlled group design application was carried out with a quasi-experimental approach in the quantitative context. Within the scope of the study 5 classical guitar students studying at the education faculty music teaching program and the state conservatory who play the electric guitar and 5 electric guitar students who have not received classical guitar training before were studied. At the beginning of the study, the students were divided into groups of 5. In the quantitative data collection phase of the research, the first of the two works prepared by the researcher was played to the subjects as sight-reading and their second performances were recorded. The performances of the second work on the other hand were collected as a video after a one-week study process was given. These recordings were rated by guitar instructors who were experts in their fields. In the qualitative data collection phase of the research, an interview form was prepared in order to get the opinions of the guitar instructors about the research topic and the prepared form and it was sent to the instructors. Content validity was determined through expert opinions for the prepared form and then applied to guitar trainers. The contents of the returned interview form were interpreted by the researcher in tables. In this interpretation, the expressions were used exactly and then the general situation of the content analysis for these expressions was interpreted. Non-parametric tests were used for the collected quantitative data and the data were analyzed statistically. When the opinions obtained from the guitar educators were examined, it was determined that classical guitar education would contribute significantly to playing the electric guitar, except for one question. It has been stated that these contributions are related to areas such as interpretation and technical skills, especially the power development of the left hand. As a result of the examination of the quantitative data, it is understood that the electric guitar students who have received classical guitar training are more successful in both sight-reading and practice. When all these data are evaluated, it is possible to say that having classical guitar education at the level of the study group and participant teachers has an effect on the electric guitar playing skills.
