Abstract
This thesis explores the artistic practice of Nezaket Ekici one of the prominent figures in contemporary art within the framework of performance art and the conceptual background of conceptual art. Following the transformative shift in art in the 20th century, artistic practices have evolved beyond purely aesthetic concerns, centering instead on thought, the body, and context. Within this framework, conceptual and performance art have repositioned the artist not merely as a producer but as an agent actively reconstructing social and individual meaning. The main objective of this study is to examine how Nezaket Ekici addresses themes such as identity, belief, migration, cultural belonging, and the female body, and to explore her contributions to the field of art through these themes. Accordingly, her performances which utilize the body as a tool of expression have been analyzed in relation to the influence of historical conceptual trends and movements such as Fluxus and Happening. Ekici's work is not only a representation of personal memory but also a manifestation of cultural plurality and collective identity. As a migrant woman artist navigating between two cultures, Ekici makes visible the tensions of hybrid identity, the impact of belief systems on the body, and gender roles, all through a critical and aesthetic lens. Her body, in this context, is not merely a physical object but a cultural text, a site of memory, and a form of resistance. Her art presents a compelling example of how contemporary art has shifted from material to idea, from object to experience. Combining a feminist stance with an intercultural language, Ekici deepens the social dimension of contemporary artistic expression. By addressing multi-layered themes such as migration, belief, and identity through the body, Ekici not only enhances the visibility of performance art in Turkey but also contributes meaningfully to academic discussions in this field. In this regard, the study serves as both a critical resource for understanding the intellectual framework of contemporary art and an analytical tool for interpreting performance practices shaped by culture, belief, and identity.
