Abstract
The aim of this study is to develop guide material to be used in the development of engineering and design skills of 3rd grade primary school students and to investigate its applicability. Within the scope of the study, the case study method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The main application of the guide material to be used in the process of developing engineering design skills was carried out with a total of 31 students studying in the 3rd grade at a school in Trabzon. In the study, the subject of natural and artificial environment in the unit 'Journey to the World of Living Things' was chosen to develop engineering and design skills. Data was collected using a semi-structured interview form, rubrics, observation and drawing test. The applicability of the guide material prepared for engineering design skills was analyzed and evaluated using data collection tools after the study. When the observation and interview findings were evaluated, it was concluded that the prepared guide material was suitable for the student level and sufficient to guide the classroom teacher. It was concluded that the pet hotel design activity contributed to the students' better understanding of how the artificial environment is formed, why it is important and its relationship with the natural environment, and to have knowledge about the characteristics and basic needs of pets. Teachers' awareness of this field can be improved in order to provide students with the 'Engineering and Design' skills added to the Science Curriculum. In this context, the participation of teachers can be ensured by organizing in-service trainings that include not only theoretical but also practical studies.
