Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the STAR approach, implemented via the Direct Instruction Method, on the mathematical problem-solving abilities of students with modest intellectual disabilities. The study specifically examined the efficacy of the STAR strategy in imparting problem-solving skills, the transfer of these skills across various contexts, materials, and individuals, the retention of skills at intervals of 5, 10, and 15 days post-instruction, and the perspectives of participating teachers on the STAR strategy. A multiple probe design involving participants, a type of single-subject research approach, was utilized. Three students, aged 15 to 17 years, with mild intellectual disability participated. The study's dependent variable was the precise completion (at least 80%) of grouping problems requiring fundamental addition and subtraction procedures. The independent variable was the STAR strategy delivered using the Direct Instruction Method. Data were examined utilizing graphical analysis methodologies. The results demonstrated that the STAR method, delivered via the Direct Instruction Method, enhanced the problem-solving abilities of all participants, with these improvements sustained in follow-up sessions held 5, 10, and 15 days post-instruction. Moreover, participants successfully generalized the acquired skills across various contexts, materials, and individuals. The STAR technique used via the Direct Instruction Method effectively improved the mathematics problem-solving ability of students with minor intellectual disabilities.
