Abstract

A. Mithat, Kur’an’ın bilimle çelişmeyeceğine tam bir itimatla, bilimsel verilere sonuna kadar kapı aralar. Elinizdeki makale, Tedrisî Tarih-i Edyan çerçevesinde A. Mithat’ın bahsi geçen hususlara dair görüşlerini değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
It cannot be said that the Ottoman education system was late in adopting the history of religion, which is a branch of science that entered the Western academy in the last quarter of the 19th century. Because, with Shemseddin Sami’s Esatir, works were started to be given on behalf of the literature on the history of religions, and the History of Religions lessons were included in the higher education curriculum from the very first Dārülfünun. Ahmet Mithat Efendi has a different and important place in this adventure. He is the author of the first History of Religions textbook taught in the Dārülfünun. In this work, which bears the name of Tarih-i Edyan (Tedrisī Tarih-i Edyan), before explaining the religious traditions, A. Mithat deals with issues such as the necessity and importance of the history of religious course/science and working methods, benefits, and resources of this science. He dedicates a wide space to issues such as the popular problem of the period, the origin of religions and their development processes. Between the lines of his work, an effort to interpret traditional views with the evolutionist and positivist points of view of the period can be perceived. A. Mithat opens the door to scientific data with full confidence that the Qur'an will not contradict science. It also shows the concern to protect Muslim minds from some "dangerous" ideas of the West and to defend some claims of the Islamic tradition. This adds a theological tone to his narrative of the history of religions. For A. Mithat, the history of religions is a branch of science that will reveal the priority of Islam while introducing world religions. One of the most interesting and assertive aspects of the text is the effort to consider the Qur'anic sensitivities while examining the origin of religion and the evolutionary adventure of man. In this respect, the work provides new openings to the history of religions and takes into account the criticisms that may come from traditional interpretations. A. Mithat's thoughts on the psychology of religion and the sociology of religion in his work should not be missed. The article in your hand aims to evaluate A. Mithat's views on the aforementioned issues within the framework of the Tedrisī Tarih- i Edyan.
