Abstract

This research aims to design an online environment supported by a 3D sign language avatar for teaching programming to hearing-impaired individuals. Developmental research (Type-1) method, one of the design-based research methods, was taken as a basis in the design processes of the 3D sign language avatar supported online learning environment designed within the scope of the research. The environment developed in this context was completed in 6 cycles as a result of the opinions obtained from experts, hearing impaired and non-disabled middle school students within the framework of 'content, visual design, 3D avatar integration and usability' components. The research was conducted with a group of 5 instructional design experts, 4 information technology experts, 1 information technology teacher working in a secondary school for the hearing impaired, 8 middle school students in 5th and 6th grade with hearing impairment, and 5 middle school students in 5th and 6th grade without any disabilities. During the design processes, opinions about the developed environment were taken from different expert groups through the expert opinion form (Appendix-1), hearing-impaired and non-disabled middle school students through the semi-structured interview form (Appendix-2), and in the final cycle of the design within the scope of the research, hearing-impaired students were asked to express their opinions through observation. The opinions were analyzed using the content analysis method. In the first application with hearing impaired individuals, the opinions of the students were obtained with a semi-structured interview form (Appendix-2), while in the second application, the students' behaviors and their opinions about the developed environment were observed by the participant observer and observer notes were taken. When the results are examined, it is seen that the contents in the designed Online Environment Supported by 3D Sign Language Avatar for Programming Teaching should be simple and supported with visuals. It has been concluded that subtitle support should be added to the environment and a 3D avatar should be integrated in order to understand the contents in the designed environment. As a result of student opinions, it was concluded that the programming environment specially designed for hearing-impaired students by integrating a 3D avatar both facilitates the learning process and provides accessibility to the content.
