Abstract
Nowadays, different learning environments other than classroom and school are needed. Therefore, in order to effectively teach environmental education topics in the 9th grade, the student must be taken to environments related to the subject. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of using a context-based learning approach supported by out-of-school learning environments in teaching the nature and chemistry unit of 9th grade students on their academic success, attitudes and motivation towards the chemistry course. A quasi-experimental method was used in this study. As a data collection tool; Nature and Chemistry Unit Achievement Test (NCUA), Chemistry Course Attitude Scale (CCAS) and Chemistry Lesson Motivation Scale (CLMS) were used. The study was conducted with 66 ninth grade students. According to the results obtained from NCUA, it was seen that the students in the experimental group performed better than the students in the control group. According to the statistical data obtained from NCUA and CLMS, a significant difference was detected between the REACT strategy supported by out-of-school learning environments and the 5E model. However, no significant difference was found in terms of student attitudes. The fact that out-of-school learning environments positively change students' motivation towards chemistry course reveals the need for differentiation in education. Considering the teaching methods used in the study, it is suggested that the REACT model and out-of-school learning environments should be further combined for future studies.
