Abstract

The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the scientific creativity, engineering design skills, and academic achievement of 6th and 7th grade students in learning environments where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) practices are included. For this purpose, the sample group of the study consists of a total of 60 students, with 40 students from the 6th grade and 20 students from the 7th grade. In this research, which employed a case study based on the effects of the program, three STEM applications were conducted at both grade levels. The targeted learning outcomes were selected from different units, and the duration between applications was approximately forty-five days. Before the start of the activities, students were divided into groups, and the groups remained unchanged until the completion of all the applications. Four different data collection tools were used in the study: the Scientific Creativity Evaluation Form, the Design Process Evaluation Form, STEM notebooks, and the Academic Achievement Test. The data obtained from the research show that STEM applications improved students' scientific creativity and engineering design skills at both grade levels. The results also indicate the development of students' sub-skills in originality, fluency, and flexibility. Moreover, STEM applications did not result in a significant change in the academic achievement of students at the same grade levels. It is suggested that researchers apply STEM practices with different learning outcomes to evaluate students' development.
