Abstract
This study aims to examine the effect of the educational game-based resource room guidebook developed for fifth-grade students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) on their conceptual understanding and life skills (communication and teamwork skills) and evaluate the educational game-based resource room guidebook. This study was carried out using the mixed method evaluation design as one of the complex mixed-method approaches. In the first stage of the study, which designed as the needs analysis, interviews were conducted with teachers and field experts. Then, in accordance with the identified needs, an educational game-based resource room guidebook (RRG) was prepared. Following the implementation of educational game-based RRG, the word association test (WAT), the conceptual understanding interview (CUI), and the drawing-supported conceptual understanding test (DsCUT) were employed to examine the effect of the implemented RRG on the students with SLD. The enhancement of students' communication and teamwork skills was examined with the observation form. Reflective diaries were used to gather teacher and student process evaluations, and semi-structured assessment forms were used to get expert opinions regarding educational game-based RRG. Eight fifth-grade SLD students from three different schools participated in the study. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques were used to examine the collected data. Results revealed that most field experts and teachers stated communication and teamwork skills should be developed over other life skills. The total DsCUT and CUI scores of all students increased after the application process. It was concluded that the students' DsCUT and CUI scores were similar, which was supported by the WAT results. DsCUT and CUI results showed a substantial difference in favor of the post and delayed scores when compared to the pre-post and pre-delayed scores. Students showed improvements in their listening, understanding, and participation skills when they received the educational game-based RRG teaching environment. Based on the advice of experts, it was decided that more time should be given to educational games. Teachers generally thought RRG was suitable, and it showed that most students enjoyed educational game-based RRG. It suggests that students with similar educational performance levels be taken to resource rooms in groups, given the results that group lessons are successful in enhancing conceptual understanding as well as communication and teamwork skills.
