Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of interactive simulations on fifth-grade students' understanding of the equal sign. The study was grounded in the theoretical framework proposed by Rittle-Johnson et al. (2011), which conceptualizes students' understanding of the equal sign across four levels: rigid operational, flexible operational, basic relational, and comparative relational. Using a quasi-experimental research design, the study involved a total of 54 fifth-grade students attending a public school, with 27 students in the experimental group and 27 in the control group. During the instructional process, interactive simulations (equal-arm balance, tug-of-war, and mobile puzzle) were integrated into the teaching for the experimental group, whereas the control group received similar content without the use of simulations. To assess students' understanding of the equal sign before and after the intervention, a 16-item achievement test was administered, with four items targeting each conceptual level. In the data analysis, the assumption of normality was first examined, and non-parametric tests were used when the assumptions were not met. For betweengroup comparisons, the Mann–Whitney U test was employed, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted to control for the effect of pre-test scores. In addition, separate analyses were carried out for each conceptual level. The findings indicated that the overall performance of students in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. Levelbased analyses further showed that the experimental group demonstrated a significant advantage at Level 1 (rigid operational), Level 2 (flexible operational), and Level 4 (comparative relational); however, no significant difference was found between the groups at Level 3 (basic relational). In conclusion, interactive simulations appear to be effective in supporting students' conceptual understanding of the equal sign. However, conceptual change at the basic relational level may require longer-term and more supportive instructional approaches. These findings suggest that interactive simulations can play an important role in fostering conceptual understanding in mathematics education.
