Abstract
Art education holds significant importance for individuals with special needs as it helps them develop their expressive abilities, strengthen their emotional intelligence, build self-confidence, and adapt to social norms. The aim of this research is to determine stakeholder opinions regarding a sample painting competition organized for students with special needs. The study was designed as a case study, one of the qualitative research methods. Within the scope of the research, a painting competition and exhibition were organized for special education schools and special sub-classes in Trabzon province. An invitation to participate in the competition was sent to special education schools and special sub-classes across the province. Students who met the participation criteria, their teachers, parents, non-parent voluntary participants, and Trabzon Provincial Directorate of National Education (MEM) personnel involved in the competition process were included in the research sample. The study group consisted of 15 participants in total. The data were collected using a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher between March 18, 2024, and November 20, 2024. Content analysis was employed to analyze the collected data. According to the research findings, students reported that the awards were both gratifying and created unforgettable memories, and they expressed a high desire to participate in similar competitions in the future. Parents stated that the competitions enhanced their children's self-confidence, happiness, and social recognition, emphasizing the need for the continuity of such activities. Teachers noted that the competitions supported social participation and individual development but also highlighted the need for improvement in award diversity and organizational processes. Based on these findings, recommendations were provided for families, teachers, policymakers in education, and those organizing art events or competitions.
