Examination of Teacher Candidates’ Experiences of Teaching Practice During the Pandemic Period

Abstract

The analyzing of how teacher candidates plan their teaching activities, whether the instructors provide sufficient guidance, and their professional developments in the teaching practice course conducted online during the pandemic process will contribute to produce of solutions for the problems experienced and to plan different practices. Accordingly, it was aimed to determine teacher candidates' experiences about online Teaching Practice I-II courses during the pandemic period. 37 science-teacher candidates participated in the study, which was conducted with the phenomenography, one of the qualitative research designs. The data were collected with open-ended questions prepared for the themes of guidance, teaching activities and professional development. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively based on the themes which the questions were structured. In the study, it was observed that inadequate communication in the online teaching practice course was frequently expressed as a negative situation by the candidates. However, the candidates stated that the most developed feature in themselves was how to communicate. Concordantly, workshops can be designed for candidates on how to communicate online and how to incorporate online environments into their teaching.Pandemi sürecinde çevrimiçi yürütülen Öğretmenlik Uygulaması dersinde öğretmen adaylarının öğretim faaliyetlerini nasıl planladıkları, ders sorumlularının onlara rehber olabilme durumları ve bu süreçteki mesleki gelişimlerinin analiz edilmesinin yaşanan sorunlara yönelik çözümlerin üretilmesine ve farklı uygulamaların planlanmasına katkı sağlayacağına inanılmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, çalışmada fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının pandemi döneminde çevrimiçi olarak yürütülen Öğretmenlik Uygulaması I ve II derslerine yönelik deneyimlerinin tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Nitel araştırma desenlerinden fenomenografik yaklaşım doğrultusunda yürütülen çalışmaya 37 fen bilgisi öğretmen adayı katılmıştır. Çalışmanın verileri açık uçlu sorularla toplanmış olup, elde edilen veriler soruların yapılandırıldığı temalar bazında betimsel analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda, çevrimiçi öğretmenlik uygulaması dersinde iletişimin yetersiz olması adaylar tarafından sıklıkla ifade ettikleri olumsuz bir durumdur. Ancak bununla beraber, adaylar süreç boyunca kendilerinde en fazla gelişen özelliğin iletişim kurma olduğunu belirtmiştir. Bu bağlamda adaylara çevrimiçi ortamda nasıl iletişim kuracakları ve çevrimiçi ortamları öğretimlerine nasıl dahil edeceklerine yönelik workshoplar tasarlanabilir.
