Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the leadership characteristics of sports sciences faculty students and their emotional intelligence levels and problem-solving skills. The research was carried out using a quantitative research approach, employing a correlational survey model to reveal relationships among variables. In the study, participants' leadership orientations, interpersonal problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence levels were compared across various demographic variables (gender, university, department, class level, income status, number of siblings, etc.). Accordingly, the study is descriptive and comparative in nature. The population of the research consisted of students studying at the Faculties of Sports Sciences of seven universities in different regions of Türkiye. The sample comprised 491 students enrolled in these faculties who voluntarily participated in the study. Within the scope of the research, data were collected using a personal information form prepared with expert consultation, the Multidimensional Leadership Orientations Scale developed by Bolman and Deal (1991) and adapted into Turkish by Taş, Gündüz, and Kaya (2017), the Emotional Intelligence Trait Scale – Short Form (TEIQue-SF) developed by Deniz, Özer, and Işık (2013), and the Interpersonal Problem-Solving Inventory developed by Heppner and Petersen (1982) and adapted into Turkish by Çam and Tümkaya (2007). Data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 software package, and skewness–kurtosis values were examined to assess normality assumptions. The findings indicated a moderately significant positive relationship between participants' leadership orientations and both their problem-solving skills and emotional intelligence levels. Regarding independent variables, no significant differences were found in leadership orientation based on gender, department, class level, number of siblings, birth order, or place of residence. However, significant differences were observed according to family income level and type of university. In terms of problem-solving skills, no significant differences were found based on department, number of siblings, birth order, place of residence, or family income level, while significant differences emerged according to gender, type of university, and class level. Finally, no significant differences were found in emotional intelligence levels based on gender, department, class level, number of siblings, place of residence, or family income level; however, significant differences were observed according to type of university and birth order within the family.
