Abstract
Science literacy aims to cultivate individuals equipped with 21st-century skills, while the Science Curriculum seeks to develop students' linguistic interaction competencies. Writing to Learn (WTL), which enhances linguistic interaction, is an instructional method that allows students to question their learning at their own pace, engage in self-reflection, and evaluate and construct knowledge. However, studies indicate that rote memorization is common in science education, and challenges frequently arise in implementing the curriculum effectively in classrooms. Frequently observed issues include limited linguistic interaction, gaps in scientific literacy, inefficient use of time, and the perception of exams solely as tools for assessment. To address these issues, it is considered effective to integrate Writing to Learn (WTL) practices into educational processes to deepen students' conceptual understanding by enhancing their writing skills. In this context, the aim of the study is to examine the effect of the Writing for Learning (WLW) practices applied in the units 'Solar System and Eclipses, Systems in Our Body, Force and Motion, Matter and Heat' in the 6th grade Science course on students' academic achievement and writing skills. This mixed-methods study, utilizing an embedded design, was conducted with 49 students in a middle school in Trabzon during the 2022-2023 academic year. Data collection tools included achievement tests, activity observation forms, semi-structured interviews, field notes, and students' writing to learn activities In teaching the subjects, both the experimental and control group students—randomly selected—were instructed according to the current curriculum requirements; however, only the experimental group students engaged in varied writing practices specifically designed for learning purposes. The quantitative phase of the study examined the effect of WTL practices on academic achievement and writing skills within the units, while the qualitative phase aimed to understand the process in detail from the perspectives of students and the teacher. Covariance analysis was used for academic achievement, and one-way repeated ANOVA was applied to analyze the developmental progress in student writing activities and classroom observations. Content analysis was employed for interviews and field notes. Findings revealed a significant difference in favor of the experimental group in terms of academic achievement and writing skills. The findings showed that students achieved conceptual understanding by integrating interdisciplinary concepts through WTL, which also improved their critical thinking, creativity, self-regulation, and scientific process skills. The study highlights that WTL practices are essential for enhancing students' writing skills and science achievement, offering several recommendations in this regard.
