Abstract
Proportional reasoning is a fundamental mathematical skill that plays a significant role in various domains of daily life. This skill necessitates systematic thinking, thus prompting numerous research endeavors. However, given the impracticality of individually scrutinizing all such studies, it is imperative to interpret and evaluate them within specific frameworks. This study aims to systematically examine master's and doctoral theses on proportional reasoning conducted in Turkey. The data of the study were analyzed using descriptive content analysis. The objectives and outcomes of fifty-five postgraduate theses registered in the National Thesis Center were scrutinized, along with the methodologies, participants, and data collection tools employed in these theses. According to the findings of the research, the levels of participants in the theses on proportional reasoning were identified, the problem-solving strategies requiring this skill were analyzed, the relationships between proportional reasoning and cognitive processes were explored, and the pedagogical competencies of mathematics teachers were emphasized. Systematic screening results indicate that students' proportional reasoning skills are below the expected level, with these studies predominantly focusing on middle school students. Tests and scales were commonly utilized as data collection tools, often supplemented by interview forms. Furthermore, while qualitative methods were predominantly adopted in studies designed in the form of case studies, descriptive designs were preferred in studies employing quantitative methods.
