Abstract
Qissat Ḥayāt al-Bukhārī: Sīrah Tārīkhiyyah Jadīdah by Ahmed al-Aktas, published in 2024 by Markaz al-Iḥsān (Jeddah), offers a chronological and contextual reading of al-Bukhārī's life and travels. From his birth to his death, the author puts forward several original chronological propositions regarding al-Bukhārī's scholarly journey, his travels, his teacher-student network, the composition of his works, and the transmission of his books, many of which had not been previously addressed in scholarship. With his profound command of classical sources and manuscripts, Aktaş employs various methodological approaches in his chronological reconstructions. When specifying the likely periods of al-Bukhārī’s meetings with teachers, Aktaş, in the absence of explicit samāʿ dates, uses their death dates as reference points. In cases involving contemporaries or students, he examines their scholarly development to assess plausible times and locations for such encounters. As such, the book enables the reconstruction not only of al-Bukhārī’s routes but also those of scholars within his network. Aktaş's approach demonstrates how biographical details not explicitly recorded in the sources can be inferred through transmitted reports. The study offers scholars an innovative reading strategy and contributes significantly to the fields of ḥadīth history and Islamic biographical research. Moreover, the critical responses provoked by its chronological claims reflect a growing scholarly vitality in the field.
