Abstract

Most belief systems place the concept of 'sin' at the center of their teaching. In religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam, 'sin' is seen as behaviors that are against God's commands and that bring punishment to the individual. Along with these religions, the concept of 'sin' is also important in Buddhism, which has the character of a doctrine. Buddhism generally defends wisdom against the conflict between good and evil. In Buddhist teaching, the individual creates suffering for themselves and others because they do not fully understand their own nature and the reality in which they live. According to the Buddha, the root cause of suffering is 'ignorance', which complicates the individual and the world. It is 'wisdom' that will remove ignorance and worldly attachments in the individual. Wisdom, based on the Eightfold Path, eliminates the concept of 'evil' through the concepts of right speech, right action and right living. In this regard, Buddhists aim to keep both the soul and body free from impurities by setting prohibitions such as taking life, stealing, sexual harassment, lying, drinking, overeating, etc. The conceptual field of 'sin', represented in Sanskrit by the words doṣa, apakṣāla, dveṣa, aparādha, pāpa and pāpaka, has equivalents in Old Uyghur. The subject of the present study consists of evaluations on the word mün, which is included in the conceptual field of 'sin' in the Manichaean and Buddhist thought system. As witnessed by historical texts, this word, which appears predominantly in Old Uyghur texts based on the Buddha religion, is the Turkish equivalent of the Sanskrit words doṣa, apakṣāla, dveṣa, aparādha, pāpa and pāpaka as a product of literal translation. The study consists of two parts. In the first part of the paper, the word mün and its derivatives, which are listed as bullet points, are attested in Manichaean and Buddhist Uyghur texts with the meanings of 'sin, defect, mistake', but are also documented in Islamic Turkish texts. The word mün, which is generally attested in Islamic Turkish texts with the meanings of 'disease, defect', is one of the common religious terms of Manichaean, Buddhist and Islamic Turkish vocabulary. The second part of the study is based on the distinction between bön, meaning 'naive, foolish, stupid' and mün, meaning 'crime, defect, mistake; sin', which are often confused with each other in etymological dictionaries. As a result of the analysis, it is understood that in Turkmen Turkic, bön meaning 'naive, foolish, stupid' and mün meaning 'crime, defect, mistake; sin' are different words.
