Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of an activity-based teaching sequence on students’ conceptual and procedural knowledge about area measurement of quadrilaterals. The participants of the study consist of 54 students studying in two different classes of a middle school located in Istanbul district. The two classes were randomly assigned as experimental and control groups. In both groups the instruction was carried out by the same teacher who is the first author of the manuscript. The instruction in the control group, which lasted two weeks, was based on the implementation of learning activities whereas in the control group it was mainly composed of direct lecturing. The research method used in the study was comparison group pre-and post-test quasi-experimental design. Data collection tools of the study consist of two tests which were composed considering the criteria that were listed in the literature to define procedural and conceptual knowledge. The performances of the participants in the tests were quantified using rubrics and Mann-Whitney U test was used to check to determine whether there were significant differences between participants’ performances. The findings of the test implemented prior to the instruction showed that the groups were equivalent in terms of having procedural and conceptual knowledge. However, the findings obtained after the intervention showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of having conceptual knowledge favoring the experimental group, and that no significant difference in terms of having procedural knowledge. In addition to this, the participants’ responses to the tests revealed that some students could not distinguish between the concepts of area and perimeter and had difficulty in applying the area formulae of quadrilaterals to problem situations. In light of the results, some recommendations as to the teaching of the focused content were provided.
