Abstract

In this study, an attention training program to improve strategic thinking and problem-solving skills in children with learning disabilities was developed and implemented, and the effects of the intervention program were examined. During the practices designed as a group educational intervention, participants were also presented with a problem-solving story in each session, in addition to the attention training program. The participants of the study consisted of 16 primary school students, including 8 experimental and 8 control group members, who were diagnosed by the authorized medical committee in official hospitals and RAM. The study is a mixed model research supported by pre-test post-test controlled quasi-experimental model and qualitative research model. In the first stage of the pre-test, the attention sustaining skills of the students were examined, and the pre-tests of the participants who were not observed any extra abnormalities or problems were taken using the Burdone attention test. For this thesis study, pre-test scores measuring the general understanding problem-solving skills of the participants were taken with the test examining attention, thinking and problem-solving skills (DDPS), which was developed for the purpose. During the application process, selected attention training and problem solving stories that will support the development of students' attention skills were additionally used. When the applications were completed, equal post-test data were taken from the experimental and control groups. SPSS 26.0/WINDOWS and AMOS programs were used to analyze the data. Significant measurement results were obtained in favor of the experimental group in problem solving and strategic thinking skills. The findings were discussed within the scope of special education, attention, problem-solving skills, learning disabilities, measurement in special education, and recommendations for teachers and families. Keywords: Attention, Problem Solving, Strategic Thinking, Specific Learning Disability
