Abstract
Medicine, one of the most respected professions in the world, is generally preferred by students with high academic success levels in Turkey. As a matter of fact, in the exams taken by hundreds of thousands of students, being able to include this profession among their preferences is conditioned on being among the first fifty thousand people. In addition to the difficulty of getting into medical faculties where medical education is provided, educational experiences covering a period of six years also include various difficulties. In addition to interest, ability, attitude and personality characteristics, various familial and environmental variables also affect the choice of the medical profession. Both these variables and different experiences during the learning process are of primary importance in shaping attitudes towards the medical profession. Various variables have an impact on the positive development of attitudes. Dedication to the medical profession and career stress are two of them. In this context, the main purpose of this study is; To examine the relationships between physician candidates' attitudes towards the profession, their career stress, and their dedication to the profession. This study was designed in accordance with the correlational and causal comparison method, which are quantitative research designs. The research group of the study consists of 486 medical faculty students studying at different universities in Turkey. Personal Information Form, Career Stress Scale, Attitude Towards the Medical Profession Scale and Medical Faculty Students' Dedication to the Medical Profession Scale were used as data collection tools. Jamovi 2.4.8.0 package program was used to analyze the data obtained from the research. Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test, Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis and Multiple Linear Regression techniques were used to analyze the data. According to the main results obtained from the study, dedication to the medical profession (β=.80, p<.001) and career stress (β=-.18, p<.001) significantly explain attitudes towards the medical profession. Female students' positive attitudes towards the profession are significantly higher than male students' attitudes (U=21611, p<.05, d=.217). Attitudes towards the profession do not show significant differences depending on grade level. The results of this study show that attitudes towards the medical profession are related to some psychological variables. While the findings of the study are consistent with some findings of studies conducted on similar groups, they differ from others. Reasons for choosing a profession and learning experiences can have an impact on the sources of similarities and differences. The results of the study show that psycho-social variables are effective on attitudes towards medicine and that these should also be taken into account in medical education.
