Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between music teacher candidates' university satisfaction and their levels of alienation toward their school (department) and university through various variables. The study was designed according to an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, in which qualitative and quantitative data collection tools were employed together. The quantitative phase included 501 music teacher candidates (328 female and 173 male) studying at state universities, based on the data of the Turkish University Satisfaction Survey (TÜMA, 2024). In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 volunteer teacher candidates selected from the three universities with the highest and lowest levels of satisfaction. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analyses, whereas qualitative data were examined through content analysis. The quantitative findings revealed that the participants' level of university satisfaction was generally moderate and that female teacher candidates had significantly higher satisfaction scores than their male counterparts. In addition, the levels of alienation toward both the school (department) and the university were found to be low. The variables of grade point average and fulfillment of expectations from the university demonstrated a large effect on the relationship between university satisfaction and school (department) alienation (f² ≥ .35). Qualitative findings indicated that teacher candidates were particularly affected by the insufficiency of social activities, the limited availability of social spaces, and the inadequacy of classrooms and individual study areas. Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that increasing social and artistic activities within music teacher education programs, improving classrooms and individual study environments, enhancing the accessibility of student services, and regularly monitoring students' expectations may contribute to increasing university satisfaction and reducing levels of alienation.
