Abstract

Huzur Lessons are tafsir lessons performed in eight sessions every Ramadan between the years 1172/1759 and 1342/1924. These lessons were held before the Caliphate in the palace with the participation of the distinguished scholars of the period who had devoted themselves to science and, who were called muqarrir (primary lecturer) and mukhatab (secondary lecturer). The scholars, who would teach the lesson, spent long time preparing for the previously identified verses by using intellectual and transferred sources. The lessons were carried out based on the negotiation method. After the muqarrir lectured the course, the mukhatab would ask questions and negotiate the lesson independently. Quran-ıKerim was interpreted following this procedure starting from Surah al-Fatiha until the 26th chapter of the Surah an-Nahl respectively. According to the records, these lessons were participated by the scholars from different regions of Anatolian and Ottoman geography. Some of these scholars were from Trabzon. This study will determine the identities of these scholars from Trabzon and, the years and the sessionstheyparticipatedin;then, informationwillbeprovidedontheirshort biographies, academic ranks and attendance charts.
