Abstract
This research aims to determine the tendencies of Social Studies teachers and prospective teachers towards teaching spatial thinking skills and their views on the applicability of the activities prepared for the 6th grade 'Culture and Heritage' learning field in teaching this skill. The research was carried out with an explanatory sequential/descriptive sequential pattern among the mixed methods. The sample of the research comprised 148 social studies teachers working in Trabzon province and 55 prospective teachers studying at the Department of Social Studies Teaching. Interviews were held with 12 social studies teachers and 12 prospective teachers who participated in the research. To determine the tendency related to the spatial thinking teaching in the research, the 'Spatial Thinking Teaching Tendency Scale (STTTS), which was developed by Akbaş, Cevher and Cincil (2018), was applied. The semi-structured interview form was used to collect data for the qualitative portion of the study. Analysis of quantitative data was carried out with descriptive statistics and the Mann Whitney-U test using the SPSS 22 package program. The content analysis method was used in the analysis of the qualitative data. In the study, it was determined that the spatial thinking tendencies of teachers and prospective teachers were at a good level. It was concluded that the spatial thinking skills of the participants were at a good level. It was also found that the participants thought that the activities that were prepared could be applied. The teachers and prospective teachers made some criticism and recommendations related to the activities. Based on these results, it is suggested to include studies that associate spatial thinking skills with historical topics in a social studies course.
