Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to determine the effect of open inquiry-based science activities on primary school fourth grade students' scientific creativity and reflective thinking skills. To reach this purpose, this study used convergent parallel design of the mixed method. The study group consisted of 43 students (16 for the first experimental group, 14 for the second experimental group, and 13 for the control group) drawn from 4th grade at the state primary schools in the city of Yozgat. The first experimental group was exposed to open inquiry-based science activities during the 'free-time activity' course as well as regular science courses suggested by the Turkish science curriculum. The second experimental group directly attended open inquiry-based science activities in their science courses while the control group followed regular science activities suggested by the existing curriculum. Data collection tools were administered to the participants before and after the eight-week intervention period. Whilst the quantitative data of the study were obtained through 'Scientific Creativity in Science' Survey and 'Reflective Thinking in Science' Scale, the qualitative data were collected through Problem Posing Worksheet and Reflective Journal. The quantitative data were analyzed along with ANCOVA, Mann Whitney-U, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Tests, whereas Problem Posing and Reflective Writing Rubrics were used to analyze the qualitative data. This study revealed that open inquiry-based science activities improved the primary school fourth grade students' scientific creativity and reflective thinking skills. Also, the first experimental group instructed by the open inquiry-based science activities showed better academic performance than the others. In addition, it was found that the open inquiry-based science activities were effective in improving the students' problem posing and reflective writing levels. The findings of the study revealed that the open inquiry-based science activities improved the scientific creativity and reflective thinking skills in all sub-dimensions and made significant contributions to problem posing and reflective writing levels. In light of the results, it is recommended that the open inquiry-based science activities should be used at the primary school to result in better learning outcomes.
