Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to examine informal reasoning patterns and argument quality of students at grades 2-4 for 'plastic waste, highland tourism and hydroelectric power plant' socioscientific issues. To achieve this aim, an embedded multi-case design of case study method was employed. The study group of the research consisted of a total of 30 students (10 for each grade), who were purposefully drawn from a state school in Beşikdüzü district in the city of Trabzon. Semistructured interviews were conducted via three different concept cartoons. Students'arguments were analyzed in regard to informal reasoning patterns (intuitive, emotional and rational) suggested by Sadler and Zeidler (2005a). Moreover, argumentation analysis rubric proposed by Krajcik and McNeill (2015) was used to evaluate the quality of their arguments. It was found that the students mostly used the emotional pattern while making decisions on socioscientific issues. Also, it appeared that the students'informal reasoning patterns showed a variability in accordance with socioscientific issues. For example, students often used emotional and rational informal reasoning patterns in the 'plastic wastes' socioscientific issue vis-a-vis others. It can be concluded that an increase in grade has resulted in the diversity of informal reasoning patterns and improved the quality of the students'arguments. In light of the results, the current study recommends that primary school students'informal reasoning patterns and arguments concerning socioscientific issues should be examined via a longitudinal research.
