Abstract
Social appearance anxiety, which is considered a subtype of social anxiety, has become quite widespread in recent years. Social appearance anxiety refers to the anxiety individuals experience regarding the negative evaluation of their overall appearance, including physical appearance, facial features, tone of voice, posture, and skin color. Adolescence is a challenging developmental stage during which individuals are overly sensitive to evaluations of their body and appearance. There are only a limited number of studies on interventions for social appearance anxiety, which is a new concept. There is a need for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based interventions, especially for implementation in schools. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of a intervention program based on the cognitive behavioral approach on adolescents' levels of social appearance anxiety. Designed according to a quasi-experimental design, this research was conducted in two phases: a pilot study and a main study. In each phase, experimental and control groups were formed, and pre-test, post-test, and follow-up measurements were taken in the main study. The experimental groups consisted of 19 high school students, and the control groups consisted of 21 high school students. The data for the study were collected using a personal information form and the social appearance anxiety scale for adolescents. The results of the study showed that the psychosocial education program based on the Cognitive Behavioral Approach was effective in reducing social appearance anxiety levels in adolescents. In this sense, the intervention applied to the experimental groups resulted in a significant decrease in the members' social appearance anxiety scores, and this decrease was found to be permanent in the follow-up study conducted after a certain period of time. In the control groups, where no intervention was applied, no significant change was observed in the relevant variables. In conclusion, it can be stated that the intervention program developed based on CBT is an effective and lasting method for reducing social appearance anxiety in high school students. Various recommendations were made for both practitioners and researchers based on the research findings
