Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to examine the effects of robotics coding education provided to primary school students. In addition, the study aims to evaluate the contributions of robotics coding education to students' cognitive and technological development, to reveal its effectiveness through qualitative and quantitative data and to analyze the opinions of students, parents, and teachers. The research was conducted within the framework of a mixed-methods research approach using an embedded design, in which the primary dataset was derived from the qualitative dimension. Qualitative data were collected through Student Opinion Forms completed by students, Parent Feedback Forms, and Teacher Lesson Notes kept by the researcher, and analyzed using content analysis. On the quantitative side, a single-group pre-test–post-test pre-experimental design was employed. Quantitative data were collected using the Robotics Coding Skills Test developed by the researcher and analyzed through descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The study group consisted of 14 third-grade students enrolled in a public primary school in Beşikdüzü, Trabzon, and their parents. The participants were selected through convenience sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods. Initially, the Robotics Coding Skills Test was administered to the students, followed by a six-week robotics coding training program comprising 36 lessons. The same test was reapplied at the end of the training to complete the process. The findings indicate that robotics coding education contributed to the development of students' robotics coding skills. Most students stated that they willingly participated in the process and wished for the training to continue. Improvements were also observed in their problem-solving proposals, and many students were able to generate their own solutions. Parental feedback supported these results, emphasizing that students developed more systematic and creative solutions to daily life problems. In conclusion, robotics coding education was found to enhance students' technological knowledge and skills, support their active participation in the learning process, promote learning, and contribute to the development of algorithmic thinking, problem-solving, and computer literacy skills, as well as enrich their English vocabulary. Based on these findings, it is recommended that robotics coding education be expanded at the primary school level and integrated into the curriculum as a formal course.
