Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the executive functioning and language skills of 48-72-month-old children with mild intellectual difficulties and typically developing children and to investigate the possible relationship between executive functioning and language skills. Relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the study. The participants of the study were 50 children, 25 children with mild intellectual disability and 25 children with typical development, aged 48-72 months. The CEFI was used to measure executive function skills and the TELD test was used to assess language skills. The data were analyzed using the SPSS-22 package program to answer the research questions. In this direction, after determining whether the data were normally distributed or not with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Mann-Whitney U and independent samples t test were used to examine the differences between variables, Spearman correlation test and Pearson Product Moment correlation test were used to examine the relationships between variables. According to the findings of the study, when the language skills of children with mild intellectual difficulties aged 48-72 months were compared with typically developing children, it was observed that the language skills performance of children with mild intellectual difficulties was limited. According to another finding, when the executive function skills of children with mild intellectual difficulties between the ages of 48-72 months were compared with typically developing children, it was also observed that children with mild intellectual difficulties had limited executive function skills. In addition, a moderate negative relationship was found between language and executive functioning skills of children with intellectual difficulties, while no statistically significant relationship was found between language and executive functioning skills in typically developing children. The current results were discussed in line with the studies in the literature. Limitations of the study were discussed and suggestions were made for future research.
