Abstract
The goal of the current study is to examine the mediation role of fear of missing out (FoMO) and nomophobia in the relationship between university students' neurotic rendencies and their phubbing. The researcher used the quantitative research approach with causal comparision model. The research participants consist of 730 (Female=499, Male=231) undergraduate and associate degree students pursuing degree in three large state universities in Turkey. The data were obtained from five different measurement tools: Personal Information Form, Horney-Coolidge Tridimensional Inventory (HCTI), Fear of Missing Out Scale, Nomophobia Scale, and Phubbing Scale. The study used descriptive data analysis and Pearson Moments Product Correlation Coefficient, Regression Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The research findings showed that the aggressive tendency has a significant relationship with phubbing; however it does not explain phubbing in final model 1 and final model 2. Specifically, according to the final model 1, the relationship between aggressive tendency and phubbing were explained via fear of missing out. For the final model 2, the link between university students' aggressive tendencies and phubbing were indirectly explained through nomophobia. Furthermore, According to the findings, docile tendency, aggressive tendency and fear of missing out significantly predicted phubbing at the level of 20.7%, while docile tendency, aggressive tendency and nomophobia significantly predicted phubbing at the level of 52.9%. In addition, it was concluded that docile and aggressive tendencies significantly predicted the fear of missing out on 38.5% and nomophobia at the level of 29.2%. Looking at the results of the correlation analysis, all variables were found to be significantly related to each other, except for the relationship between disconnected tendency and phubbing. Discussion and limitations are discussed.
